RANGERS and Celtic will reportedly be given the option to reschedule upcoming Champions League fixtures after the death of the Queen.

Both Glasgow clubs are set to play their second matches in the group stage of the competition next week.

However, according to reports Rangers and Celtic could both choose to rearrange the fixtures against Napoli and Shaktar Donetsk respectively after the Royal Family announcement.

Rangers are currently scheduled to play Napoli at Ibrox on Tuesday, Septmeber 13. While Celtic are due to play Shakhtar in Poland on Wednesday, September 14.

It's not clear whether there'll be any difference in rearrangement options if matches are scheduled to be held at home or abroad as of yet.

It was confirmed this evening that the Queen had passed away aged 96 at Balmoral this afternoon.

A Royal Family statement read: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

"The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

It's expected the Queen's passing could see sporting events cancelled as a period of mourning begins throughout the UK.

Under reported Operation London Bridge plans sports events could be cancelled for a ten-day period - however this has not been confirmed.

The EFL announced Friday's fixtures would be postponed as a mark of respect with a decision on the weekend's matches expected tomorrow.

There has been no confirmation yet from the SPFL over this weekend's fixture list.

But it's reported both Rangers and Celtic would be allowed to rearrange their Champions League fixtures next week should they wish.

Daily Mail correspondent Mike Keegan shared information suggesting it would be "inconceivable" that British clubs would not be given option to reschedule European fixtures.

He tweeted: "Clubs are expecting an announcement on the weekend’s football fixtures in the morning, following the Queen’s passing this afternoon.

"A repeated view among those I’ve spoken to is that they’re ‘almost certain’ games will be off as a mark of respect.

"With regards to next week’s European fixtures, I’m told it’s ‘inconceivable’ that British clubs would not be given the option to rearrange by UEFA, should they wish to do so."
