CELTIC and Rangers could be impacted by a new controversial Champions League proposal.

Europe's top clubs are reportedly 'considering the idea of playing some Champions League group stage games in the USA, China or the Middle East'.

The Athletic report that the idea was floated this week at UEFA's executive committee meet on Hvar, Croatia, ahead of the general assembly of the European Club Association (ECA).

Both meetings allow European football chiefs to explore new ways of allowing the game to grow.

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who is chair of the ECA and a member of UEFA's executive committee, reportedly backs the plan.

The idea is currently just a proposal, but it could be explored further after the ECA released a report showing a third of Chinese football fans and 28 per cent of those in the US were influenced by football's major competitions.

The report stated: “This highlights that there are opportunities for European clubs and competitions to build on this interest and influence; to increase the availability of European club football to these audiences and allow exposure to these events to continue building further and deeper interest and engagement.”
