BENJI SIEGRIST could have been Rangers No.1 rather than sat on Celtic's bench this season.

That's according to ex-Hoops ace Charlie Nicholas.

The former Dundee United stopper was linked with a move to Ibrox last season.

However, he was snapped up by Celtic during the summer as a free agent after leaving Tannadice at the end of his contract.

Allan McGregor has re-established himself as Gers No.1, while Jon McLaughlin plays the back-up role.

And Nicholas reckons Siegrist would have helped Rangers' current position.

He wrote in his Scottish Daily Express column: "I remember last season there was some talk of Rangers being interested in Benji Siegrist.

"If they had followed up properly the ex-Dundee United keeper would be No1 at Ibrox now rather than sitting on the Celtic bench.

"I am amazed that Gio van Bronckhorst didn't go out and get a new goalkeeper. It was the one glaring weakness and it was shown by Allan McGregor's awful performance against Liverpool.

"Losing 7-1 was a humiliation, the stark reality of where they are."
