Neil McCann reckons Giovanni van Bronckhorst should have been more "bullish" in his responses to Rangers' 1-1 draw with St Mirren.

The legendary winger outlined how he would approach interviews in such a difficult position and feels a more aggressive approach would serve the Dutchman better.

Asked by the BBC if he would remain the confidence of the Rangers board, van Bronckhorst had said: "We have to see. It's still football and if you have a run like this a lot of things can happen. In football you never know."

It was a response that didn't go down well in the Sportsound studio and while McCann understands where his former teammate is coming from, he feels there was a better path.

He told the BBC: "I think he doesn't want to come across as stupid and say something like he's absolutely going to be here and then the board take a decision and change the manager. He knows he's under pressure and he knows the results haven't been good enough and that questions will be asked of him and the board. These questions journalists are asking him will replicated at board level of whether he can turn it around.

"I'm not going to sit here and say Giovanni should be removed. Absolutely not. Is that squad capable of more when everyone's fit? I would say yes. It remains to be seen whether he can get a group of players back fit. The current players will get a couple of weeks off then be asked to return. But everything needs to improve. Everything.

"I think he could have been bullish and spikey. You can fight fire with fire. I would have been very bullish there if I was put in that position myself but I think Giovanni looks as if he knows he's going to come under heavy fire."
