BARRY FERGUSON insists Rangers need a former player within their first-team coaching staff and the club legend would not turn it down if he was approached.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is under severe pressure at Ibrox after poor results in the Champions League have been coupled with slip-ups domestically in the Scottish Premiership.

It remains to be seen whether he will be in charge as the Govan side return to action against Hibernian after the four-week World Cup break.

But for club legend Ferguson, he feels a new addition must be made to Van Bronckhorst's coaching staff.

He told Go Radio: "You don't need to ask me that. I think you know the answer.

"Rangers is my team. I was lucky enough to have the privilege to play there as captain and win so many trophies.

"So of course I would be. I would be lying if I said no.

"Listen, I'm enjoying my life just now. It's nice and quiet. But I do think it does need people in there that know the club, the demands and the expectations

"There's people out there that know that and that are not in a job. Doing similar to what I'm doing just now, a bit of punditry.

"I do think it's certainly needed.

"One springs to mind, like a Neil McCann say, who has done a bit of management.

"I think it's needed that players like that come in and help a manager. It's something that I think is badly needed, no doubt in my mind.

"Glasgow Rangers is an institution. You're brought up on winning. You've got to win every single game.

"That's what I think is needed brought back into the club.."

Meanwhile, Van Bronckhorst has vowed to fight on as Rangers manager.

He said: “I have no fear, no. I never have fear. I just see what comes but I don’t have fear.

“We are going to sit down (with board), that is for sure, and speak about the last couple of months and which way to go forward.

“I said many times before that if we keep dropping points I am accountable for that. That is what comes from the job.

“We prepare the players as best we can and then they have to put in the performance. That is always the case. As I said before, the way we conceded the goal, we had to be sharper.

“It is a five-week break before the next game. Time to reflect and rest and recover and then we have two weeks to prepare for the first game against Hibs.”
