INCOMING Rangers coach Damian Matthew had a stint as a Celtic scout after he was axed from his first main coaching role at Charlton Athletic.

New Ibrox boss Michael Beale is set to bring in three coaches from his old club QPR, with former Chelsea and Crystal Palace midfielder Matthew joining up along with Neil Banfield and Harry Watling.

Matthew was a youth development officer at Chelsea and moved to Charlton as a first team coach before he was axed in 2015 when then-Addicks boss Guz Luzzon was fired.

And Matthew was helped back into football by the Hoops who handed him a role looking at young players and targets in the south of England the following year.

In a later scouting podcast, Matthew revealed: "When I lost my job at Charlton in October 2015, I took a bit of time off out of the game although I was watching matches.

"So I then became the scout for Celtic for London and the south east of England.

"Although it was only a part-time role, it was healthy because it allowed me to watch games again and see some good young players.

"But Celtic understood that I was always aspiring to get back into the coaching side of the game.

"There were one or two opportunities that arose but weren't quite right, but I was really pleased when a friend of mine, Jamie Hoyland, went into Everton in a scouring capacity and he asked me if I would like to join up with them and I cleared it with Celtic and I joined them in 2016."

The former England Under 21s star went on to be a first team coach at Welling United before moving to Millwall's youth academy and then QPR as a coach under Beale in June.
