Giovanni van Bronckhorst was a victim of his own success at Rangers, his agent has claimed.

The Dutchman was sacked from his role as Ibrox gaffer last week after just 12-months in charge.

He left the club nine-points behind Celtic in the title race, having also lost out on the title last season too.

However, Van Bronckhorst did deliver big success for the club during his time too, in what was overall a mixed bag over the course of the year.

He won the Scottish Cup in May, as well as guiding Rangers to a Europa League final.

The former defender also secured Champions League qualification for the club for the first time in 12-years.

That soon turned into a nightmare in the group stages, as they officially went down as the worst ever side to compete in UEFA's elite competition.

Michael Beale has been appointed as the successor to Van Bronckhorst.

But the Dutchman's agent, Guido Albers, insists his client was only treated so harshly because of his previous success.

He told talkSPORT: "He was ready to move forward but he didn’t get a chance. Disappointed because the club is amazing.

"He felt he needed more time, the Champions League puts pressure on the team. They played a lot of games.

“It was difficult to make the team better. It was the time to move forward. The structure of the club – they put a lot of finances in the club a few years ago, the money available was not much.

"He was not very lucky with the transfers. I thought he would get another chance. For me personally, it would have been better not to qualify for the Champions League – a victim of his own success."
