Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has received an an honorary doctorate from Queen's University in Belfast.

The Northern Ireland captain has been honoured for his services to sport in his homeland.

The 37-year-old was pictured today in his robes to mark the occasion.

Davis can ass the degree to his list of other achievements in football, including his title as an MBE for his services to the game which he received in 2017.

Fellow Northern Irish football stalwart Julie Nelson was also awarded the same title at the special winter graduation ceremony.

The pair have more than 270 international appearances for Northern Ireland between them.

Davis commented: “I am honoured to receive this honorary degree. I’m in esteemed company and it’s great to see football being recognised in such quarters as The Queen’s University of Belfast.”

Nelson added: "I am incredibly honoured to receive an honorary doctorate from Queen’s University. Representing Northern Ireland means the world to me and it is touching to be recognised for my contributions.

“This honour shows the continued high regard for women’s football in Northern Ireland and it was special to receive this award alongside our international men’s captain Steven Davis.”

Meanwhile, Davis will be preparing for Rangers' first game back after the enforced winter break due to the World Cup.

Michael Beale will take charge of his first game as Rangers manager when Hibs come to Ibrox on Thursday night.

The game kicks-off at 8pm in Glasgow, as Beale will look to get his reign off to a positive start.
