St Johnstone have opened talks with David Wotherspoon regarding a new contract.

The Canada international, 32, is out of contract at the end of the season.

The tenacious midfielder is one of the McDiarmid Park side's most decorated players, with three trophies to his name.

However, with just six-month remaining on his current deal, the World Cup star is free to speak to other clubs.

The player has revealed talks are in the early stages, as he seeks to clarify what his immediate future looks like.

He told SaintsTV: "It has not been a great period for us lately, we have to get back to what we are good at. We are looking forward to this weekend to try and put that into action.

"We haven't looked too far ahead to the next run of games, all our focus is on Livingston this Saturday and how we can pickup the three points. We want to perform well and give the fans something to cheer about.

"I am delighted to be back training on a regular basis after being out for so long. The World Cup was a great motivator for me to work toward, but my main aim is to now get back into the team here and help us win games.

"I have spoken to the gaffer about my contract, he wants to start talks with me. I want to know what type of future lies ahead of me. However, at the moment all we are focused on is getting back to winning ways and picking up three points.

"We haven't started well in recent games, we need to address this issue because when we do get going we are a threat and can cause teams problems."

“There is dialogue,” said Davidson. “David’s a key part of our squad and team. A new contract is definitely something we’re talking about.

“We’ll put in our best offer.”
