The Rangers goalkeeping position has been a talking point since the very start of the season.

Just now, current manager Michael Beale appears to be opting for rotation with Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin both in and out of the team.

Robbie McCrorie is also waiting in the wings but Rangers fans have expressed their fears and have urged the club to go into the transfer window to bring in a new No1 choice.

Beale says he is confident with what he has at his disposal, as he explained on Wednesday night.

“Maybe if we hadn’t played 120 minutes at the weekend we might have stuck but it was the right thing to do,” Beale said of his decision to change goalkeepers.

“I think everyone should expect to see Allan again at the weekend and then after that we’ll assess from there.

“It’s clear that at the end of the season we need to either bring a goalie in or make sure we make a decision on either Jon or Robby (McCrorie) to be number one. I have to give all the players in house an opportunity as well.

“I am going to change players in this squad over time. I’m going to change the look of Rangers to move forward. We are going to re-energise us with young players coming in and we’ve got a lot of uncertainty surrounding some of our players.

“At the moment, everyone is pushing in the right direction. I could not be more pleased with the three goalkeepers I’ve got right now if I’m honest.

“Obviously, Robby’s not fit but he was in Scotland’s last squad as third choice. Obviously, Craig (Gordon) has got injured so Robby is really keen to play. Whenever Jon plays he does well for us.”

Here our Glasgow Times Sport writers assess the possible outcomes in the Rangers goalkeeping saga...

The goalkeeping saga at Ibrox is one Michael Beale could do without.

It's understandable that the Ibrox boss is keen on testing the waters with all of his options. But from the outside, it only appears to add confusion over the Ibrox No1.

Sure, Beale has cited McGregor as his first-choice on occasion, but it's unclear whether he'll still be at the club next season.

McLaughlin has been given opportunities to perform but hasn't grabbed his chances and has somewhat left supporters wanting in his bid to claim a starting spot.

The somewhat unknown quantity of Robby McCrorie is the third option for the Ibrox gloves - but has he really done enough to take that spot next season?

In the glimpses we've seen of McCrorie for Rangers, he has more than impressed - yet still he has been unable to earn game-time under Giovanni van Bronckhorst or Beale. Even if he is currently out with a slight injury niggle.

There's no doubt Rangers are spoiled for choice in the goalkeeping department but it's just not quite working. For that reason, Beale should be on the lookout for a new No1 at the end of the season.

Rangers can get through the remainder of the season without the added headache of a January addition - but another season of question marks over the goalkeeper position will help no one.

Beale could do with a settled and reliable pair of hands. It's worth investing in a quality keeper in the summer and ending the Ibrox goalkeeper guessing game for good.

I fully believe that football players, and goalkeepers especially, can only improve with a run of games and the full trust of their manager behind them. With this in mind, I don’t think Rangers need to dig into the transfer market for a new shot-stopper. Allan McGregor is getting on at the age of 40, but they have two more than capable replacements in the background in the shape of Jon McLaughlin and Robbie McCrorie.

I can understand some of the concerns around McLaughlin looking overly comfortable when he is called upon, but again only minutes on the pitch can improve confidence and matchday sharpness. With a consistent run of matches in the Rangers goal I am sure the Scotland international would improve and show why he should be the No1 choice. He has proved in the past for both club and country that he is capable of commanding his box and producing fine stops from between his goalposts.

McCrorie looks to be a real talent too and the fact he recently signed a new contract shows the club have faith in him. He was already performed in huge tests and atmospheres both domestically and in Europe and these experiences can only help him moving forward.

Michael Beale has revealed that his young stopper is currently carrying a knock, but he did explain his hopes of bedding the goalkeeper into the Rangers squad before the current season is out.

A final word on McGregor. If he does decide to hang up his gloves at the end of the season, Rangers should do all they can to keep him at Ibrox in a coaching capacity. He is without doubt a figure that the club can still benefit from having around the place, even if he is not playing on the park.
