Giorgos Giakouamkis is reportedly in talks with Atlanta over a move to the MLS.

The Greek striker is widely expected to depart Celtic this month after contract talks stalled.

Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds looked to have sealed a £3million move for Giakoumakis last week.

Now, however, Atlanta has emerged as another possible destination for the 28-year-old.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports Atlanta are keen to bring in Giakoumakis as a designated player at the club.

But he claims Urawa Red Diamonds remain in pole position to seal a transfer for the striker.

Romano tweeted: "MLS side Atlanta are in talks to sign Giorgios Giakoumakis from Celtic as Designated Player.

"Urawa Red Diamonds, leading the race since two weeks but it’s not sealed yet."

Meanwhile, Celtic hero Peter Grant is confident Ange Postecoglou will only allow Giakoumakis to leave if he has a replacement ready.

The former Parkhead midfielder is a fan of Giakoumakis but is confident Celtic can trust Postecoglou if he decides to let the striker move on.

He said: “I don’t think the manager would let [Giakoumakis be sold] unless he has a replacement lined up.

“I really like Giakoumakis. I was impressed when I saw him in Holland where he finished top scorer with a team that got relegated, which says it all about his ability to stick the ball in the back of the net.

“He’s different to what Celtic have in the building right now and they have to replace that.

“But you have to trust and respect the manager. He won’t allow him to go unless he’s got a replacement.”
