Celtic defender Stephen Welsh is the subject of interest from an English League One side, according to a report.

It's been said that Sheffield Wednesday have made an enquiry about the young central defender.

The 22-year-old has had limited game time so far this campaign, with just six appearances to date.

Welsh has fallen way down the pecking order with Cameron Carter-Vickers, Carl Starfelt and now Yuki Kobayashi in front of him in the centre-half position.

Now, Football Scotland say that Sheffield Wednesday have been alerted to Welsh's potential availability.

The report states they have been in touch with the Scottish champions to gauge the possibility of a six-month loan deal until the end of the season.

Should the Hoops give the move the green light, it would likely go down to the wire to get it over the line ahead of tomorrow night's deadline.

Welsh is believed to be keen to play more first team football while still at a developing stage of his career.

Gaining more minutes under his belt in League One could be seen as the ideal next step for him until the end of the season.

He has 52 Celtic appearances to his name, including in the Champions League.

MLS clubs have also been keeping an eye on the player, who Postecoglou remains a fan of Welsh and has previously blocked an exit for the defender.

It is not yet known whether a move will be sanctioned, as it's stated that the Australian may look to keep hold of the Scotland under-21 international after allow Moritz Jenz to leave for Schalke.
