Swansea boss Russell Martin has revealed that he had Rangers fans messaging him regarding a potential transfer for Morgan Whittaker.

The frontman looked destined to move to Ibrox in January, but in the end a deal could not be agreed upon between both clubs.

Whittaker was out on loan at Plymouth Argyle for the first half of the season, but now he has returned to Swansea and is set to feature for the Championship outfit.

“Morgan's back,” Martin said of Whitaker. “The whole thing about Morgan, I've got a brilliant relationship with him. I hope that’ll show in the next three months. He understood why I wanted him to go out on loan and play football. The amount of work Josh did to stay in contact with him.

“He’s come back and not been frustrated with me, I didn't make the decision to call him back. Again, it’s not in my control. He’ll be in the squad tomorrow. I’ve had Rangers fans message me on Linkedin saying let him go. I apologised to them saying sorry I was crap at your club but it’s not my decision.”

Plymouth boss Steven Schumacher offered an insight into why a deal could not be agreed in January.

He explained:

"I was in constant contact with his agent. I have been in contact with Morgan because he just wasn't sure what was going to happen.

"It looked for one minute he was going to get his move that he was going to go to. And then Swansea changed their mind and he was part of their plans.

"I know we have got five loans already. But I think if I had gone back to the board and said 'Look, Morgan is available' then I'm sure they would have done that if we felt that was the right thing to do.

"The message now is he's going to play a part for Swansea. So I wish him well."
