Few inside Ibrox would have begrudged Partick Thistle a lead at the interval after an impressive first half against Rangers.

Ian McCall's Championship side more than matched Rangers in the Scottish Cup encounter at Ibrox this afternoon.

But, there were complaints over the nature of the goal scored by Thistle with Kevin Holt slotting home from the penalty spot.

Antonio Colak was penalised for a handball in the box in the 35th minute of the match.

The striker has jumped to attempt to head the ball before it came back towards him and hit him around the wrist.

David Munro allowed play to go on but was instructed to view the incident on the pitchside monitor by Steven Kirkland.

After the check, Munro pointed to the spot, leaving Holt to tuck home the penalty.

Viaplay pundits Alan Hutton and Marvin Bartley were left bemused by the decision as they reflected on the flashpoint during the break.

"It is such a difficult one," said Hutton. "For me it is not a penalty - I don't know what he is supposed to do.

"He's going up and trying to header the ball, it's over his head, and he's got a second to react because it is coming back so quickly.

"His arm is there to help to keep him on his feet and then he's got no time to react so I can't understand how that is given as a penalty."

Bartley - manager at Queen of the South - agreed with Hutton as he insisted the decision was "mind-boggling" despite both men hailing Thistle's first-half display.

"I think Alan, you are being very nice there. For me, that has never ever been a penalty kick," said Bartley.

"The fact that it has been given and the referee has been sent across then checked it and given a penalty is mind-boggling.

"He has got his hands in the air to protect himsels first and foremost. If his hand is down at this point he is in massive, massive trouble.

"There is no way that he can intentionally handball that. Sooner or later this rule has to change or people who are controlling what happening with these rules have to think logically.

"That is not a handball. That is not a penalty kick. Every player does that, you;re hand goes up to protect yourself and then to give you balance.

"We are going to have so many penalties every game if it is every time it hits somebody's hand."
