Scotland manager Steve Clarke has been tipped for the vacant Aberdeen post.

Dons legend Frank McDougall wants to see his former club go out and get the Chelsea legend.

The Pittodrie side are on the hunt for a new boss after Jim Goodwin was sacked last month.

Barry Robson is currently in interim charge of the club and has been in the dugout for three games so far.

The 44-year-old is expected to remain in the post until at least the end of the month, with the recruitment process for a new boss slowed down until Alan Burrows starts his position as chief executive.

When it does come to appointing a new gaffer, though, McDougall wants to see Clarke approached by the Dons.

The 59-year-old has enjoyed great success with Scotland since taking over from Alex McLeish in the summer of 2019.

His impressive job at Kilmarnock saw him appointed the national team boss.

While it seems very unlikely he would drop from the Scotland gig down to Premiership level again, McDougall certainly views him as a potential candidate.

McDougall told the Press and Journal: "There have been a lot of names mentioned for the Aberdeen manager’s job but Steve Clarke would do me.

"He has done a great job with Scotland with what he has available to him.

"Clarke does not have players like Kenny Dalglish at his disposal. Yet he delivers results and that is what matters.

"Clarke knows Scottish football inside out and I think that is very important when you are Aberdeen manager.

"Results are the main thing. He got that at Kilmarnock and is also getting them with Scotland.

"Aberdeen need to start getting results now and Clarke is a manager who delivers that.”
