Kris Commons has taken aim at Michael Beale insisting that he and his Rangers team have a lot to learn.

The Ibrox outfit were defeated 2-1 yesterday in the Viaplay League Cup final by rivals Celtic as Ange Postecoglou's side came out on top.

Commons was thrilled for his former side and he felt there was a gulf in quality between the two teams at Hampden Park.

The former Parkhead player also took aim at Beale for his comments in the lead up to the fixture, as he branded Postecoglou "lucky" and also called out pundit Chris Sutton as the worst player ever to play for Chelsea.

Commons wrote in the Daily Mail: "It was at the end of yesterday's Viaplay Cup final that Celtic supporters unveiled a banner behind the goal at Hampden. The statement on it read: '22 trophies in 11 years, we set the standard.'

"This was, of course, in relation to Michael Beale saying it was key to uphold the 'standards' that matter at Ibrox after he allowed Partick Thistle to cancel out Malik Tillman's controversial goal in a Scottish Cup tie.

"A group of Rangers supporters had hit back at Beale with a banner at Livingston that read: 'Two trophies in 11 years. Uphold the standards that matter.' The display by Celtic fans yesterday was quite ironic, really, given the build-up to the final. They could have got their message across before the game but they chose to wait until the silverware was in the bag.

"If it had been a Rangers banner, they probably would have unveiled it before the game, in keeping with comments coming out of Ibrox in recent times. The bottom line is this: when you represent Celtic or Rangers, you have to be extremely careful in what you say.

"Yet here are Rangers with a new manager in Beale who has called Ange Postecoglou (right) 'lucky', and who went off on a rant about Chris Sutton.

"Then, in the days before the cup final, they had a player, Fashion Sakala, claiming that Rangers were the best team in Scotland. Sakala might think that and that's fine. But you should only be saying it after you've won a game of importance. Don't say it before the game. It only attracts negative energy and adds fuel to the fire.

"From a Celtic point of view, they will want that kind of stuff to keep coming from Rangers before big matches because it only intensifies things.

"Postecoglou and Callum McGregor will have got the players together in the meeting room in the build-up to the game and said: 'It's time we showed them.'

"Celtic were worthy winners yesterday. Let's be honest, the scoreline made it look a lot closer as a contest than it actually was.

"Rangers huffed and puffed a bit in the second half and they put Celtic's back four under more pressure than they had in the first period.

"They got in their faces and they had a good crack at it. But, towards the end of the game when it was really stretched, Celtic had chances and overall they could have scored another three or four."
