Controlled parking zones at Celtic Park and Ibrox stadium are back on the agenda for Glasgow City Council.

Plans were being devised by officers before the Covid pandemic but were then put on hold.

Now the council says it is revisiting the plans to address parking and traffic issues around the stadiums on matchdays.

Proposals are at an early stage, but would see parking officers in the streets around both grounds to enforce the controls, when they are introduced.

The plan will also cover Hampden for big football matches and events such as concerts.

A report for councillors said: “For the majority of events, enforcement will commence two hours before the event starts and one hour after the event ends.

“For health and safety reasons, parking attendants will leave the Celtic/Rangers areas before the end of the match.”

The report said between eight and 11 staff would be deployed to the stadium areas for enforcement of any restricted parking orders on event days

It stated: “In terms of the above sporting events, the Parking Enforcement team will liaise with Police Scotland and Rangers FC/Celtic FC/Hampden Park with regards to priorities for any fixture being held and any required targeted enforcement of areas due to parking or access issues."

The council said plans are still in the early stages and no date has been set for when the parking zone controls and enforcement would begin.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “When proposals for parking zones for Ibrox Stadium and Celtic Park were withdrawn last year, we were clear that parking remained an issue around both stadia on match days.

“The proposals were withdrawn due the disruption to the public hearing process caused by the covid pandemic and the likelihood that traffic regulation orders would not be completed within statutory timescales.

“But we still had an obligation to address the detrimental effect match-day parking continues to have on the communities that surround both stadia.

“We committed at that time to look again at the options for addressing match-day parking issues at both stadia and engage with all relevant stakeholders on the way forward.

“This work is still in its early stages but we have been working with specialists, undertaking refreshed traffic surveys and linking with elected members and affected communities.

“Full details on how match-day parking issues can be addressed at both stadia will be brought forward in due course.”
