Alan Stubbs has floated a potential transfer to Newcastle for Kieran Tierney.

The Scotland international is out of favour under the leadership of Mikel Arteta after former Manchester City full-back Oleksandr Zinchenko was brought in last summer.

Tierney is now second choice and his game time has been limited this season at the Emirates.

Newcastle have been liked with a move for the former Celtic defender and Stubbs reckons a move north could be a beneficial for both parties.

He told Grosvenor Sport: "I don’t think Kieran will struggle for options. He will have plenty of admirers in the Premier League and in Europe.

“It does look like he will have to leave Arsenal to get more game time.

“I was surprised they signed Oleksandr Zinchenko because Kieran had done very well and the fans liked him – even though he had some injury problems – but Zinchenko is Mikel’s No1 and Kieran can’t get in the team.

“Newcastle are reportedly in the market and that looks like a good move to me. It’s closer to home as well but they are a team on the rise and I can see that one happening.

“They have big plans and I’m sure their ambitions will match those of Kieran."

On Tierney's situation, Steve Clarke explained this week: “It’s one of the things you have got to deal with when you are playing at a top-level club. I had it myself when I was a player.

“Obviously in the early days at Chelsea it was a little bit easier but once you had the foreign influence starting to come in and better players start to turn up, you find yourself at a level where you are maybe not going to be selected to play every game.

“You have to deal with that. I have spoken to Kieran reasonably recently and he is handling the situation well. He understands why he is not getting so many minutes in the Premier League.

“It’s unfortunate that’s he picked up an illness last week or he would have played the game in Portugal. They have the return leg this week and I am hopeful he will get a start and some minutes.

“He has just got to knuckle down and get on with it. That’s what he is doing. You have to be a good professional and work as hard as you can. His club are flying at the top of the league so, while it’s not great that he is not playing, he can take some comfort from the fact the team is playing well.”
