Ally McCoist has admitted he is stunned Kieran Tierney isn't a regular starter for Arsenal after his standout showing for Scotland.

The former Celtic full-back was hugely impressive in the incredible 2-0 triumph over Spain at Hampden.

And having watched Tierney up close in action again, McCoist is staggered over the defender's limited role at Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta has favoured Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back this season with Tierney more regularly given game time from the bench.

And while McCoist would love to see Tierney flourishing in the Arsenal side - he backtracked and asked for the full-back not to play...to keep him fresh for Scotland.

Discussing the historic Hampden win with talkSPORT host and Arsenal fan Laura Woods, McCoist said: "We were different class. The two goals from McTominay, he was different class from midfield going forward.

"Hickey was ridiculous at right-back, Porteous and Hanley at centre-half...

"Tierney, listen, going to get Tierney a game at Arsenal? You must be some team, I'm telling you right now, you must be some team because Tierney was tremendous.

"Actually, I take that back, continue not to play him so he is fresh with us. That's what to do, just continue not playing him so he is fresh for us."

Tierney was forced off in the second half as he appeared to be struggling with a knock.

However, McCoist was far more interested in the rampaging defender - who plays in a central back-three for Scotland - going forward and assisting the second goal.

On the injury concern McCoist said: "I don't know. It might have been an element of fatigue because he's not been playing an awful lot."

But lavishing praise on Tierney for his surging run down the left-flank to indirectly tee up Scott McTominay for his second, McCoist concluded: "He's brilliant for the second goal. Tremendous. Carvajal was poor but his run for the second starts, honestly, 30 yards inside his own half. Brilliant."
