Des Buckingham is the latest name to have emerged as a possible contender to become Celtic manager.

Social media posts on Wednesday appear to show Buckingham - Mumbai City FC boss - arriving in Glasgow.

And a flurry of bets have been placed on Buckingham being named Ange Postecoglou's replacement with his odds tumbling from a rank outsider to 11/4 (SkyBet) in recent hours.

That places him just behind Bodo/Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen and Brendan Rodgers in the bookies' favourites for the role.

Here, we explain who Des Buckingham is and his career to date...

Who is Des Buckingham?

Des Buckingham, 38, is the current manager of Indian Super League side Mumbai City FC.

A qualified pilot, ski-instructor and sports science teacher; Buckingham has a host of experience in and out of football.

Buckingham is from Oxford but has lived in New Zealand, India and Australia.

He was also enrolled on the 2019 High Performance Sport New Zealand Coach Accelerator Programme to develop world class coaches in the country.

Which clubs has Des Buckingham managed?

Buckingham began his coaching career at Oxford aged 18.

He worked through the age-groups at his hoimetown club before eventually stepping up to coach the first-team.

At Oxford, Buckingham worked under Chris Wilder and helped 24 players go from the youth ranks to signing their first professional contracts.

From Oxford, Buckingham moved on to Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand in 2014.

He joined as a coach but was then named manager in his own right, in 2016, after Ernie Merrick's resignation. His appointment made him the youngest boss in the division's history at 31.

Buckingham would lead the club off the bottom of the table to just outside the play-offs in his time in charge.

In 2017 Buckingham returned to the UK to join Stoke as an assistant coach for the under-23 side.

However, he would return to New Zealand one year later as head coach of the under-20 side and assistant for the national team.

He won the under-20 Oceania Football Championship and led the side to their best ever under-20 World Cup finish - knocked out in the round of 16.

Buckingham would progress to be appointed New Zealand under-23 manager where he would lift the Pacific Games and OFC titles.

New Zealand players wrote to the governing body in a bid to keep Buckingham before he moved to City Football Group club Melbourne City as assistant.

During his time with the club he celebrated the first league title for Melbourne City and then the A-League Grand Final in a double-winning season.

Buckingham then joined current club Mumbai City FC - also a City Football Group club - where he has been in charge since 2021.

In his first season the club finished fifth - then achieved the first win for an Indian club in the Asian Champions League.

However, Buckingham then led Mumbai City to their second league title - with a record number of points and wins during the season.

He was subsequently named manager of the year in India.

Did Des Buckingham have a playing career?

Buckingham played for both Oxford and Reading as youth player.

He played for the youth and reserve sides at both clubs but did not go professional.

Instead, he quickly transitioned into coaching at just 18 years old and studied full-time coaching and teaching at Oxford & Cherwell Valley College.

What has Des Buckingham said about his future?

Buckingham has put down much of his success to the willingness to take the road less travelled in coaching.

He places huge emphasis on his decision to leave the UK to pursue coaching opportunities to lead him to his role at the City Football Group.

He previously told the BBC: "I won't sugar-coat it, there has been a lot of hard work and sacrifice to get here.

"Taking the decision to go to New Zealand initially was out of my comfort zone and a real challenge.

"Looking back, if I had I sat in England I would've missed out on all these opportunities because back in 2013 the only real job was head coach.

"That has changed now and there are a lot more coaching opportunities in England.

"What I've done is just one way to progress a career, I found myself overseas and I wouldn't change that for the world, but there are lots of ways to progress your career now."

On the possibilities in his future, Buckingham said last month: "I don't know what the future looks like but I do know I want to continue doing the best I can in Mumbai."

Why is he in Scotland?

While links to Celtic were quickly speculated upon, it's claimed Buckingham is in Glasgow on a visit to see friends.

The Scottish Sun claim he is not a serious contender for the Celtic job.
