Youngster Ben Summers has signed a new contract which will see him remain at Celtic until at least 2026.

The highly-rated 19-year-old has come through the club’s academy, and made his first-team debut last season.

That was back in April when he came on as a substitute late in the game against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, and he followed that up with another substitute appearance on the final day of the Premiership season, a 5-0 home win over Aberdeen.

Summers, along with a number of other young Celts, trained with Brendan Rodgers’ first-team in pre-season and he was part of the Celtic squad which travelled to Portugal and Japan.

It is understood that Summers could be sent out on loan this summer and he has been linked with a move to Dunfermline.

James McPake has also been linked with a move for St Johnstone legend David Wotherspoon who was released by the Perth club this summer.

McPake explained: “We believe that we put in a fair offer for what our football club can do.

“David is an international footballer, who most recently played in the Gold Cup and not so long ago was at the World Cup [with Canada] so he is quite right to explore his options.

“What we can’t do is wait about.”
