Celtic are reportedly keen on signing FC Nurnberg star Kanji Okunuki.

This is according to Sky Sports Germany, who claim the Hoops are "interested" in the midfielder after scouting the Japanese star "intensively" in recent weeks.

Okunki has scored four goals and provided two assists in the Bundesliga 2 across 15 appearances so far this season.

It is suggested that the Scottish champions are yet to make a formal approach for the Japanese player but he is said to be one of their top targets for the upcoming January transfer window.

The Hoops have had plenty of success in the Asian market over the last few years, with former boss Ange Postecoglou arriving from Yokohama F.Marinos kicking off a detailed recruitment drive from the region.

Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Oh Hyeon-gyu are just some of the success stories to come from Asia and make an impact in Glasgow.

Okunki was also previously a target for Hearts, with sporting director Joe Savage previously stating a deal was close before the player moved to Germany.

He told the Hearts Standard: "We thought we had that done then out of nowhere his agent contacted me to say he is going to FC Nürnberg, they were prepared to offer more money.

"But we’ve got everything agreed!"
