Neil Warnock is in the frame to take over as Aberdeen manager.

The Dons intend to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season.

BBC Sport claims that experienced boss Warnock is one of the three candidates the Pittodrie board have spoken to. It's said Dave Cormack is hopeful of making an appointment next week, with Peter Leven in caretaker charge.

Neil Lennon, Jack Ross and Alex Neil have all be ruled out for the interim position.

Aberdeen take on Premiership leaders Celtic at Pittodrie this lunchtime. They sit eigith in the table, two points off the top six.

Warnock, 75, was most recently in charge of Huddersfield. His management career has spanned 44 years.

Meanwhile, Derek McInnes has quashed rumours Kilmarnock gazumped St Mirren with an over-the-odds financial offer for Kevin van Veen.

The former Motherwell striker completed a loan switch to Rugby Park from FC Groningen on deadline day.

Van Veen - nicknamed the Budget Bergkamp - chose a move to Kilmarnock over offers from St Mirren and former club Motherwell.

Groningen had accepted similar proposals from St Mirren and Kilmarnock for Van Veen, 32, but the forward decided to join McInnes after initial discussions held back in December.

“It became clear that it was between us and St Mirren, we had to go every step of the way with them," said McInnes of the transfer pursuit for Van Veen. “It’s two clubs that are a similar size with similar ambitions, we were in a fight.

“Thankfully the club supported us on it, and it got to the point both clubs agreed a deal and it was down to Kevin.

“I need to quash the rumour or the narrative that we threw loads of extra money at it, we never, and that’s a fact."
