Dalziel Rugby Club marked its 100th anniversary by hosting a match against rivals Uddingston, the same team they played a century ago in Motherwell.

Before the match in Dalziel Park started, a short historical film was unveiled, highlighting the club's journey through World Wars and an ongoing global pandemic.

Willie Talbot, club president, said: "The club's centenary marks a landmark achievement.

"As the film shows, that journey has been characterised by moments of joy, achievement, heartbreak, and hope.

"There’s been many heroes, and many who have given selflessly. We were absolutely delighted to host Uddingston 100 years after that very first game.

"Who would've known back then that the team of 15 men would have grown into the thriving, inclusive, and welcoming community that Dalziel is today.

“The atmosphere here was incredible on Friday night, a testament to all we've built together as a club."

He said there were many more events planned throughout the year.

A packed Dalziel side, wearing a replica of an early strip, secured a 73-0 win.

The club film, besides delving into the its history and challenges, focused on its growth and strength.

It was a collaborative group effort from the club featuring contributions from former player Euan Duguid, members Bill Samuel, Scott Duguid, Cameron Harris, club president Willie Talbot, and Davie Fleming.

Mr Duguid said: "We've delved through archives, interviewed members past and present - and staged an all club photoshoot in what turned out to be atrocious conditions!

“In Dalziel spirit, we played what was in front of us, left no stone unturned and huge thanks to all who have supported us in creating a really potent production. And special thanks to our friends at the brilliant SNS Group who brought the concepts to life.

"Overall, I think the centenary, and making this film, has given us all another chance to reflect deeply on what the badge means, and the importance of community in increasingly uncertain global times.

"As well as the players, friends and family at our side, we're playing in the memory of all those who came before us, and in the hope of setting the standard for the many boys and girls, women and men who will represent Dalziel Rugby Club in the future."

In a bid to further engage its supporters, Dalziel has made the film public which can be viewed here https://vimeo.com/911844314.
