Rangers have got the go-ahead to sell booze in a marquee for the upcoming Old Firm clash on April 7 at Glasgow city’s licensing board today.
The tent will be erected in the Edmiston House car park and will be open to home fans only – with food, alcohol and background music playing.
A police inspector recommended conditions including limits on alcohol for the operation of the marquee considering the “rivalry” between the two sides and the nature of the event.
The requirements, which also covered stewarding, were accepted by the board.
Lawyer Stephen McGowan representing, Rangers Football Club, said the marquee was an example of how the club wanted to deliver something “special” and “novel” as part of efforts to create a “better atmosphere.”
He said: “Over the last few years Rangers have been enhancing match day experiences for fans.”
There will be a limited 200 tickets available for the marquee, which are expected to sell out quickly, the board meeting heard.
Alcohol will be served between 2pm to 4.30pm alongside food.
The tent will also be open before kick-off for food but closed during the game with no alcoholic drink sold until after the match finishes.
Speaking at today’s licensing board meeting, which granted the occasional alcohol licence bid, Mr McGowan described it as a “modest” and “low key” application.
Govan councillor Dan Hutchison, Scottish Greens, questioned why the hospitality was being offered outside instead of in Edmiston House, which cost millions.
Mr McGowan said people want to be outside experiencing the atmosphere.
