Celtic have been thrown an encouraging lifeline in their potential pursuit of Koen Casteels.

The goalkeeper is set to leave German side Wolfsburg and is expected to be a man in demand after he represents Belgium at this summer's Euros.

Celtic are in the mix, amongst other clubs, to sign the keeper on a free this summer upon his departure from the Bundesliga club.

Brendan Rodgers is looking to secure a long-term replacement for Joe Hart, who will retire after the final game of his career against Rangers in the Scottish Cup final 2024 this Saturday.

And they have been provided with some encouragement over a move for the player, who has over 300 appearances during a nine-year stint with Wolfsburg.

Belgian football experts Joueurs Belges have taken to social media to provide an update on the 31-year-old.

Anderlecht in his homeland are keen to sign him. While this is of interest to Casteels, essentially, his preference would be to join a club in next season's Champions League - something Celtic can offer.

Their post on X translates to: "The Koen Casteels track would be seriously considered by RSC Anderlecht, who would like to make a big splash in the Belgian transfer window.

"The player would have strong salary demands but would not be indifferent to a return to Belgium and would not have denied anything.

"However, competition would remain tough with clubs qualifying for the Champions League."

Speaking to Wolfburg's official website at the weekend, Casteels admitted his future had not been tied up yet despite talks with some interested parties.

He said: "I don't have a new club yet. We've already held initial talks but it's not 100 percent certain which club I'll be playing for next season.

"My son was born in Wolfsburg, so I'll always have that connection with the city and the club. When I look back on my career after my playing days are over, Wolfsburg will definitely be the club at which I spent the most time and which allowed me to transform from a youngster into an established Bundesliga goalkeeper."
