Romanian FA technical director Mihai Stoichita has bizarrely urged Celtic to sign Ianis Hagi...so he could beat former club Rangers.

The former Ibrox star is still without a club and is training back home with Farul Constanta, who are owned by his famous ex-Barcelona and Real Madrid star father, Gheorghe.

He left Rangers in the summer and has yet to sign for any club, despite Legia Warsaw being strongly linked with him last week.

Hagi was handed a new, improved offer this week by Steaua Bucharest, which could mean a return to Scotland to play against Aberdeen in the Europa League play-off if they defeat Kosovan club Drita FC in the third qualifying round.

But the country's technical director reckons Celtic should pull off an audacious swoop instead.

He said: "I would be happy to see Ianis Hagi at Celtic.

"Let him play for them and beat Rangers.

"Look, if he signs for Steaua Bucharest, I don't think it's a step backwards for his career at all.

"He is fit and could play immediately. If he signs for a club now, he could easily play for the national team in the World Cup qualifiers in September and I pray for that.

"He needs to be calm and make a decision."
