Italian football hero Marco Materazzi has suggested that Gennaro Gattuso could one day become the Rangers manager.

Currently managing the Italian national team, Gattuso has achieved significant admiration from the Rangers fanbase, despite only spending one year at Ibrox.

He is gearing up for a World Cup play-off against Northern Ireland with hopes of leading Italy to the 2026 World Cup.

Materazzi has claimed that the former Ibrox midfielder holds a special place in his heart for Rangers.

He stated that although Gattuso is dedicated to his current position, his future could lie at the Scottish Premiership club.

Speaking to Hajper, Materazzi said: "I don’t know if Rino wants to move on from the Italian national team job.

"He wants to reach the World Cup and then after the tournament, see what he can do.

"But he loves Rangers. He is still a fan.

"I think in the future he will be at Rangers as their manager. Not now but in the future."

Materazzi’s comments are complemented by similar sentiments expressed by Kyle Lafferty—former Rangers striker—who played with and under Gattuso at Sion and Palermo.

He continued: "Gennaro Gattuso is like my little son.

"We grew up together at Perugia.

"He called me Padrino and then I called him Figlioccio.

"So for me, he was never a strong player to play against him because we laugh and we are very close friends.

"Rino has such a big heart."
