Pollok's proud record as one of only two clubs to have played every season in the Super Premier Division - Auchinleck are the other - ended last night when they were officially relegated following a 3-2 defeat at basement rivals Glenafton.

And it only rubbed salt in the Southside outfit's wounds that their fate was sealed by derby rivals Arthurlie coming out on top 2-0 at home to Cumnock to secure their own safety and, at the same time condemn Rob Roy - beaten 4-0 by Hurlford - to a play-off double-header.

The final whistle saw Barrhead supporters celebrate the double boost afforded by their team's escape along with the demise of Pollok and, with good reason, because not even diehard Cumnock supporters could deny Gavin Duncan's men were resounding winners on the night.

Right from the outset they had shown the greater attacking enterprise and their reward came in 21 minutes when Paul Stewart raced through to fire a low shot past goalkeeper Ally Semple for 1-0.

The Nock No.1 may have felt let down by the players in front of him, however he had nobody to blame but himself when Arthurlie doubled their advantage in 33 minutes.

An overhit corner saw the ball reach stopper Kevin Green wide on the left and his cross saw Semple make a complete hash of trying to touch the ball over his own crossbar, only succeeding in playing it off the woodwork thus allowing Stevie Dymock to net with a header.

Arthurlie were content to sit on their lead throughout the second period and they comfortably dealt with Cumnock's few attacking sorties.

The final whistle evoked joyous scenes on the Dunterlie terracings particularly as word filtered through of Pollok's defeat despite twice taking the lead at Loch Park through Davie Winters and Adam Strachan.

Glenafton countered on each occasion with goals from Cameron Marlowe and Jamie McKernon before ex-Pollok frontman Alain Kinney netted the winner.

The Glens could yet drop into the play-off spot, but Tommy Bryce's side would need to heavily lose their remaining four fixtures.

Rob Roy were put to the sword by Hurlford, for whom Kieran Patterson (2) and Danny Mitchell (2) were on the mark, while Sean Fraser bagged the only goal as title-challenging Irvine Meadow moved to within three points of Auchinleck with a 1-0 victory over Clydebank.

Super First high-flyers Shotts boosted their step-up hopes with a 4-0 defeat of Renfrew, but fellow-challengers Beith were not so fortunate in having their game against Glencairn abandoned due to a broken ankle sustained by Glens defender Brian Eadie when the Ayrshiremen were 1-0 to the good from an Andy Reid strike.
