GLASGOW'S last-gasp bid to make speedway's Premier League play-offs suffered a devastating blow as they fell at the very last hurdle at Peterborough last night.

The Tigers led from heat two at the East of England Showground after Adam Ellis and Kasper Lykke struck a 5-1.

Glasgow's second away win of the season looked on as early as heat four when Ellis headed home Panthers heatleader Ulrich Ostergaard to take the visitors six ahead.

The home men hit back in heat five to get to within two points, but Glasgow reinstated their lead when scoring consecutive 4-2s through Theo Pijper and Rusty Harrison victories in heats eight and nine.

But the match turned on its head just a few races later. First, Ales Dryml and Max Dilger beat Lykke and Kevin Wolbert to take a 4-2. And the deficit was eaten up when Rusty Harrison crashed in heat 13 to give the home men a 5-1.

Glasgow weren't finished yet, however, as Tero Aarnio and Ellis raced to a 4-2 to send the Tigers two ahead going into the last heat.

However, the Tigers' inconsistencies proved costly when Aarnio and Pijper were beaten by both home men, whose 5-1 handed Peterborough a 46-44 win and three vital league points.

The Tigers came home with a consolation point, for losing by less than six points, but a big ask of making the play-offs has been made even bigger.

Glasgow must beat Edinburgh at Armadale on Friday - and repeat that feat at Ashfield on Sunday - to keep any hopes of extending their league season alive.
