ALEX MacDONALD was a fans' favourite at Ibrox during his long, illustrious career, winning many trophies, including Rangers' famous European Cup-Winners Cup triumph in 1972...

MALKY and ROBB (Torrance) – My brother and I were reminiscing about the first match we saw on our parents' first colour television. This was the League Cup final of 1975-76. Rangers beat Celtic 1-0, with a headed goal. My brother insists Derek Johnstone was the scorer. I don't agree, but I can't remember who did score. Help please!

You are correct to say that Derek Johnstone was not the scorer, the only goal came from a fine diving header by Alex MacDonald.

QUINNY (Kilsyth) – I was reading in the Evening Times recently about Sunderland's sensational FA Cup win in 1973. Have you any information on a friendly they played against Celtic just after this?

On Monday, August 6, 1973, Sunderland visited Celtic Park for a pre-season friendly. The Rokerites beat the Bhoys 2-1.

Tueart and Hughes scored for the visitors, Johnstone got the Celtic goal. A crowd of around 21,000 watched the following teams line up:–

Celtic: Hunter, McGrain, Brogan, Murdoch, McNeill, Connelly, Johnstone, Murray, Deans, Hay and Lennox.

Sunderland: Montgomery, Malone, Guthrie, Horswill, Watson, Pitt, Kerr, Hughes, Halom, Porterfield and Tueart.

STAN (Mount Florida) – The first cup final that I attended, in which neither of the Old Firm played, was the 1979 League Cup final between Aberdeen and Dundee United. Did Willie Pettigrew play for United in this game and did he score?

The match at Hampden ended goal-less. The replay was played at Dens Park with United winning 3-0.

Two of their goals were scored by Pettigrew, Paul Sturrock got the other.

J. ROBERTS (Glasgow) – Do you have details of the international appearances of George Hamilton of Aberdeen?

Hamilton won five caps for Scotland during his time at Aberdeen. He won his first cap in 1946 and his last cap in 1954.

He scored a total of four goals and three of them were in one game against Belgium in Brussels when Scotland won 5-0.

He played against Ireland, Belgium, Austria and Norway twice.

RED & WHITE (Polmadie) – Did former Third Lanark star Bobby Craig, who played for the club in the Fifties and then moved on to play for Sheffield Wednesday and Celtic, ever return to play for the Thirds?

Yes he did. Eight years after leaving the club he returned to play for Thirds on February 4, 1967.

He played against Alloa at Cathkin and scored within 30 seconds and the Hi-Hi went on to win 3-0.

He featured in nine of the last 13 League games and was part of the last team ever when they lost 5-1 away to Dumbarton on April 28, 1967.
