LIVERPOOL enjoyed a productive evening last night without even kicking a ball as two of their rivals slipped up.
With the Reds beating Manchester City 3-2 on Sunday to remain at the summit of the Barclays Premier League, their position at the top of the table was strengthened as City could only scrape a 2-2 draw against struggling Sunderland.
Ahead after just two minutes through a Fernandinho effort, Manuel Pellegrini's men were pegged back at the Etihad via a Connor Wickham brace, putting the Black Cats ahead with just seven minutes left.
Samir Nasri's fierce effort two minutes from time rescued a point for City, with them six points behind Liverpool with just one game in hand. Chelsea are second, two off the leaders.
The Anfield club also received a boost from across Stanley Park as Everton were defeated 3-2 at home to Crystal Palace.
Second-half goals from Steven Naismith and Kevin Mirallas had got the hosts back level, but Cameron Jerome's winner left the Toffees a point behind Arsenal in the race for a Champions League place.
