TOMMY COYNE was a prolific goalscorer with most of his clubs during his successful career and is the only player to have been the Scottish Premier Division top scorer with three different clubs (Dundee, Celtic and Motherwell)...

RYAN (Waterfoot) – Am I right in thinking that Tommy Coyne once scored a hat-trick for Celtic on the opening day of the season against Hearts at Tynecastle?

You are correct. Date was August 12, 1989, and Celtic arrived in Edinburgh to play Hearts on the opening day of the season for the second year in a row.

Coyne had joined Celtic in the spring of 1989 and made little impact as the Hoops won the Scottish Cup but failed to retain their title from the previous season.

Tommy had scored 37 goals in one record-breaking season for Dundee, but his arrival at Parkhead had been somewhat overshadowed by the signing of Jackie Dziekanowski from Poland.

However, he emerged from the shadows with a startling contribution at Tynecastle.

Coyne`s three goals, including one penalty, were enough to seal a 3-1 victory for Celtic, despite a late consolation from McPherson for Hearts, as the men from the east end of Glasgow set out on the long quest to regain the title.

Celtic: Bonner, Morris, Burns, Aitken, Whyte, Grant, Galloway, McStay, Dziekanowski, Coyne, Fulton.

Hearts: Smith, McLaren, Kirkwood, Levein, Berry, McPherson, Colquhoun, Mackay, Musemic, Ferguson, Bannon.

C W (Glasgow) – Did Davie Wilson play his last game at Ibrox in a Dundee United strip? If so, full details please.

Davie Wilson did turn out for Dundee United at Ibrox on January 16, 1971, in a 1-1 drawn match, but this was not his last game there.

His final official game at Ibrox was in Dumbarton colours on November 25, 1972, in a 3-1 defeat to Rangers.

The home side were ahead at the interval through Young, but McCormack levelled for Dumbarton before goals from Conn and Parlane sealed the victory.

Reports of the game suggest Wilson equipped himself well and was one of Dumbarton's better players.

The teams were:–

Rangers: McCloy, Jardine, Mathieson, Greig, Johnstone, Smith, Conn, MacDonald, Parlane, Mason, (McLean), Young.

Dumbarton: Williams, Menzies, Wilkinson, Jenkins, Cushley, Graham, Wallace, C. McAdam, McCormack, T. McAdam, Wilson.
