A doctor at a Glasgow medical centre has tested positive for coronavirus - after a patient was diagnosed with the virus at the same practice.

We revealed on Sunday how a patient who attended Crookston Medical Centre on Dalmellington Road on Wednesday, March 11 was diagnosed with the deadly COVID-19 virus.

The practice has now revealed that later that night, one of their GPs become unwell.

That doctor has since tested positive for the virus and the medical centre were informed of the result on Saturday.

The affected GP did not see the coronavirus patient, but instead had developed symptoms after what they assume to be unrelated exposure within the centre.

Dr William Graham, from the practice, said: "It is thus highly likely that the virus is much more prevalent in our country than would appear to be the case from the official figures and hence the reason that we need to continue to be vigilant and wherever possible self-isolate if we develop symptoms of new-onset cough, fever, muscle pains and breathing difficulties."

He says that nearly all of the patients directly exposed to the affected doctor have been informed of the positive coronavirus result of the GP, though it has not been possible to reach everyone as they did not have an updated telephone contact number.

They are now urging everyone to provide updated telephone landlines, mobiles and email addresses for all of their patients wherever possible.

The current guidance for all of our patients is to self-isolate if they have the symptoms described above even if moderately ill.

Those more seriously ill should request medical assistance.

It comes as 44 people were confirmed to have contracted the virus in Glasgow, with 171 in Scotland as a whole.

Dr Graham added: "Currently Public Health have requested that we do not take swab tests from individual patients as the laboratory system will not cope with the expected demand and that testing should be reserved for only the most severely affected individuals who require to attend the hospital.

"At Crookston we are in the process of cleaning the surgery thoroughly but for the safety of our patients at this worrying time we have restricted our service mainly to telephone triage, telephone consultations, video consultations and email consultations along with our normal prescription service unless it is absolutely necessary to see patients face to face.

"Be aware that our clinicians will be in the surgery premises as normal and available for clinical assistance unless they are ill or have tested positive for the Coronavirus.

"We thus regret this restriction to our clinical service and hope to be able to restore a normal service as soon as we possibly can but also ensuring the most reliable safety measures possible for our patients.

"However it is a rapidly changing situation and we are trying to comply as closely as possible to the guidelines of Health Protection Scotland on a day to day basis."
