HEALTH bosses have hit back at claims from a whistleblower "useless" personal protective equipment (PPE) is being handed out to Glasgow medics.

A video has emerged on YouTube showing a hooded figure putting on a mask that has reportedly been given to workers in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHS GGC).

Wearing what appears to be an NHS uniform, the anonymous whistleblower makes a number of claims about the lack of protection afforded to staff by the PPE they have been given.

Bosses at the health board have since responded and told the Glasgow Times all of the equipment shown in the video is in line with both Scottish and UK guidance.

The clip, titled 'NHS P.P.E EXPOSED', has now racked up over 500 views online.

Speaking in the video, the nurse said: “Before I demonstrate the items that healthcare workers are expected to wear, I would like to make it extremely clear that this is not a mistake.

“These are the very items that have been chosen to be given to healthcare staff who are caring for patients diagnosed and displaying symptoms of the deadly coronavirus Covid-19.

“Despite numerous complaints about not being protected and multiple healthcare workers becoming ill and dying due to contracting Covid-19, the NHS and Scottish Government still think it’s okay to issue this useless PPE to vulnerable staff, intentionally putting them at severe risk of contracting Covid-19.”

PPE has been a cause of concern for many frontline NHS staff throughout the pandemic and we have previously told of worries shared by medics.

In April, a British Medical Association (BMA) survey of more than 6,000 doctors across the country said a significant amount of them remain without the protection they need to guard against Covid-19.

Meanwhile another survey by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) found half of nurses have felt pressure to work without appropriate protective equipment during the crisis.

An NHS GGC spokesperson responded to the video by saying: "We want to thank all staff for continuing to care for patients and keeping them safe in response to COVID-19.

"We’re really concerned to see a member of staff has felt the need to report this anonymously. Our staff are always supported to speak up if they are worried and we will make sure they are supported to do so. We want to reassure every member of staff they are free to raise concerns.

"All of our hospitals and community services currently have adequate PPE supplies and those demonstrated in the video are appropriate for droplet precautions which is how COVID-19 is transmitted.  The PPE worn is in keeping with both Scottish and UK guidance.

"We follow the national guidance on COVID-19, including the latest guidance issued by Health Protection Scotland in relation to what PPE is necessary for all of our staff. As per guidance, staff receive appropriate PPE for performing their duties.

"Our procurement team has done an outstanding job to ensure our staff have had a steady supply of PPE in the face of this global issue. We have worked closely with the Scottish Government, National Procurement and local suppliers to achieve this. We are now working towards make sure we have good reserve stocks. We have staff on each site ensuring supplies are going to the areas that require them."
