Pubs and restaurants in Glasgow are to close again for the next two weeks and a raft of new lockdown measures imposed as coronavirus cases broke through the 1000 a day mark.

Glasgow and the central belt areas of Scotland, where there is a far higher rate of positive cases, has tougher rules imposed than the rest of the country.

Nicola Sturgeon said they were "difficult but necessary" measures.

She said: "We are not going back into lockdown today" while accepting it will feel like a "backward step".

Latest figures showed deaths where someone had tested positive for coronavirus doubled across Scotland, in a week, to 20, the highest weekly total since late June.

There have been more than 4,500 positive tests in the last seven days and more than 1700 were in the Greater Glasgow area.

The measures take effect from Friday at 6pm to Sunday 25 October. 

For Greater Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Arran, Lothian and Forth Valley all licensed premised will be required to close.

Cafes with no alcohol licence can open from 6am to 6pm

Other measures include indoor group gym classes banned, adult contact sports will be banned, but professional sport can continue.

Bingo, casinos, pool and snooker halls will close.

People are asked to avoid public transport but there are no mandatory travel restrictions.

Nicola Sturgeon said she was asking people in the central belt not to travel outside the health board area they live in, if they don't need to.

For the rest of Scotland, pubs, cafes and restaurants can open indoors from 6am to 6pm but will not be allowed to sell alcohol indoors.

Alcohol will not be allowed to be sold indoors or outdoors in Greater Glasgow and other areas across the central belt where there is a higher rate of coronavirus cases.

The rule where up to six people from two households can meet will remain in place.

The First Minister however, said there was some reason for optimism despite the restrictions.

She said: "We are benefitting by sacrifices made over the summer. Cases are rising but not as quickly as they were in March."

An evidence paper from the Chief Medical Officer Gregor Smith, Chief Nursing Officer Fiona McQueen and National Clinical Director Jason Leitch showed the rise in cases and in particular the problem in central Scotland.

Today’s figures show, 1,054 new cases of COVID-19 reported. It is 13.0% of newly tested individuals.

It is an increase of 254 from the 800 reported the day before.

Around 40% of the new cases, 410, were in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area. 195 were in Lothian and 190 in Lanarkshire.

There was one new reported death of people who have tested positive

There were 319 people in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19 an increase of 57 and 28 people were in intensive care with recently confirmed COVID-19.

The government will also introduce regulations to extend use of face coverings in staff canteen and corridors in workplaces.

And it is asking shops to re-introduce two metre distancing.
