One woman was taken to hospital after a fire took hold in an East End building last night. 

Six fire engines were called to Shettleston Road at the height of the blaze just before 5pm. 

One fire engine remains at the scene this morning. 

Residents from a number of flats were evacuated by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

The woman was taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and received treatment for smoke inhalation but has since been released.

Cops have launched a probe into the cause of the fire, and Shettleston Road remains closed between Chester Street and Versailus Street.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "Police were called around 4.55pm on Friday, 6 November, 2020 following the report of a fire at a property on Shettleston Road, Glasgow.

"Shettleston Road at Chester Street and Versalius Street remain closed.

"One woman was taken to the GRI for smoke inhalation. She has since been released.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire."

Shettleston councillor Thomas Kerr reacted to the news on social media. 

"Extremely worrying news from Shettleston Road this evening," he wrote. 

"I hope everyone got out safely and please try avoid the area if possible, let our emergency services do their job."
