POLLOKSHIELDS Primary School has officially delivered the final Glasgow Times Bank on Us toy donations of 2021.

The gifts, which were collected earlier this week, have been delivered to Glasgow’s No1 Baby and Family Support Service who are working diligently to provide present packs - featuring five toys and a warm jacket - before the big day arrives on Saturday.

It was staff at the school who took on the role of Santa’s elves this year, taking it upon themselves to fill dozens of bags with new toys for our annual campaign.

Teacher Lewis Pollock was one of the group to take part and he’s already planning to sign up again next year.

However, it wasn’t just the Southside school that showed its festive spirit ahead of Christmas Day.

Pupils and staff at Our Lady of the Rosary Primary in Cardonald, Shawlands Primary and St Timothy’s Primary in Greenfield also handed in hundreds of bags each filled with thousands of presents for the city’s most underprivileged children.

Councillor Chris Cunningham, city convener for education, skills and early years said: “Once again our schools are delighted to support the Glasgow Times’ Christmas toy appeal and it is heartening to hear that they’ve had a magnificent response from the people of Glasgow.

“We’ve all experienced such a challenging two years but we all know how kind, generous and compassionate our citizens are and will always find reserves to support each other.”

All of the gifts collected have now been distributed by our sponsors Storage Vault to our participating toy banks spread out across the city.

However, Glasgow schools will also be celebrating Christmas as a result of the pupils’ generosity.

Hillington Primary, Govan’s Riverside Primary, and Parkview Primary in Maryhill as well as Smiley Stars Nursery in Ibrox were all recipients of hundreds of gifts to ensure no child will go without on December 25.

Earlier this week, around £10,000 was spent on presents at A1 Toys which had been raised by kind-hearted readers through our GoFundMe page.

Now, final preparations are underway to ensure families receive the presents in time for Christmas Day this weekend.

As previously reported, tens of thousands of Christmas gifts have now been collected across Glasgow for children facing waking up without a toy under the tree.

This year has brought hardship for thousands of families across Scotland as tough coronavirus restrictions have resulted in job losses, business closures and financial uncertainty.

Months of lockdown at the beginning of 2021 has put intense pressure on charities to help meet the increasing needs of those referred to them.

One such charity is Refuweegee, which benefitted from the donations delivered by pupils this week.

Selina Hales, who founded the group and acts as director, said: “The donations will make a huge difference in welcoming people and extending that kindness that we know the city is so well-known for.”
