PLANS to build a drive-thru restaurant near Ibrox stadium were withdrawn yesterday following a campaign to stop the works.

Glasgow City Council received plans for an eatery on the grounds of a petrol station in Paisley Road West, in September last year.

Currently, the site is home to a shop, a four-island petrol pump forecourt and a disused drive-through car wash.

The plans would have seen a two-storey drive-thru restaurant, an extended shop and a new car wash facility.

We reported earlier that after the application, the Scottish Greens started a campaign to block the plans and urged locals to voice their disagreement.

They argued that the nearby Starbucks, KFC and McDonald's in the Helen Street retail park are sufficient for local residents.

The plans were validated by the council in October last year but yesterday, they were withdrawn by the applicant.

Govan councillor Allan Young, of the Scottish Greens, said: “The decision to withdraw this application is welcome news for the over 500 people who opposed it.

Dan Hutchison, Scottish Greens candidate for the Govan ward, said: “Developments which rely on more private car use have no place in a climate emergency or the people-friendly city we need, especially when cars would be left idling right under people’s bedroom windows, like in these plans.

“We now need the Council to step up and back Green councillors’ calls for an immediate moratorium on applications for new drive thrus.”
