For me, if the 90s had a smell, it would be Versace Red Jeans perfume.

I recently came across an old bottle of that iconic perfume and it instantly took me back to my teen years.

Launched in 1994, Versace also sold Blue Jeans aftershave for men and later brought out Baby Rose Jeans perfume in 1995.

But the original was best in my humble opinion and it's true what they say...smells can evoke memories.

Most people of a similar age might remember the hype surrounding Versace in Glasgow in the 1990s among teens.

Phase one for any self-respecting teenager would involve getting your hands on the Versace Red Jeans perfume for Christmas. As soon as you opened the tin, that sweet smell filled the air. It was so distinctive and if you know, you know. Once you owned that piece of Versace you wanted more.

The fashion house, founded by the late Gianni Versace, was situated in the city's trendy Italian Centre. They had a beautiful shop on Ingram Street with marble floors and it instantly became a hit with teens thanks to their much more affordable Versace jeans line.

Bright colours, crazy Versace pattern and demin jeans were all on offer. They stood out with their distinctive Versace Jeans Couture label on the back which had a medusa head.

Much more affordable than the high-end couture Versace is known for, most girls at my secondary school wanted a pair. A trip to that store meant you were entering phase two of the Versace obsession and once you secured the goods you could proudly display the glossy black Versace store bag with red handles.

I often wish I was more like today's teens taking endless photos so I could look back on myself wearing these jeans. But my memory is still strong recounting every detail of them with a smile.

I remember lower-end stores attempted to do a version. I'm trying to forget baby jeans. The ones which came in red and blue with pictures of babies all over them. Surely you remember?

The Versace store closed in Glasgow a number of years ago but I'm sure some of you will agree it was loved by many.

And the next time you are at the fragrance counter, give red jeans a smell and trust me it will take you back.
