FAMILIES in Glasgow are being urged to apply for a cost-of-living support payment.

The grant of £49 is available in the city to help with the cost of household fuel.

The one-off payment is being paid to parents and carers with children at home who get a council tax reduction.

Tens of thousands of households in Glasgow are eligible for the payment from a fund worth £1 million.

People who think they qualify should apply through the council’s website and money will be paid into their bank account or by a top-up voucher.

Ricky Bell, Glasgow’s City Treasurer, said: “We are in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, and we will do all that we can to support those hardest-hit by rising energy costs in these challenging times.

“Fuel bills are set to rise again in the next couple of months.

“We know that this is not an entire solution for households, but it will provide a top-up or allow families to use the saving on other household bills at a time when we need it the most.”

The council said many people have still not applied and cash is waiting to be claimed.

Councillor Bell added: “Since October we have seen a steady rise in applications to the fund, but we know that many more families who are eligible have not applied, and I would urge them to do so now.

“To make it as simple as possible we have developed an online form to fill in – and if you need internet access you can visit your local library to fill the form out.”

People can apply for the grant here, at www.glasgow.gov.uk/fuelsupport

The grant also comes with the offer of independent advice on energy-related issues.

Home Energy Advice Team (HEAT) will allocate the grants on behalf of the council and will work with Glasgow Helps, a new council service offering free and confidential support, information and advice to citizens, giving access to the right support at the right time and place.
