THE extension of a Renfrew primary school has been set alight in a suspected fire-raising incident. 

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were alerted to the blaze at Kirklandneuk Primary around 10.38pm last night. 

Two fire engines were sent to the scene and a small fire was found at an extension that is currently under construction.

The fire was extinguished and there were no casualties reported as a result of the blaze. 

Police Scotland confirmed the incident is being treated as suspected wilful fire-raising and anyone with information regarding the fire is asked to contact police via 101, quoting incident number 3842 of March 28. 

Cllr John Shaw, from Renfrewshire Council, said on Facebook he was "desperately sorry" to hear about the fire and called the attempt to set the extension alight "sickening".

He also shared a statement from Renfrewshire Council which read: "There was a small fire which caused minimal damage to the new extension which is currently under construction.

"Our Property and Health and Safety teams have carried out inspections and our contractor is carrying out the necessary remedial work.

"The main building remains open for staff and pupils as normal and learning is not affected."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police were called to a suspected wilful fire-raising at Kirklandneuk Primary School, Renfrew at around 11pm on Monday, March 28.

"Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Police on 101 quoting incident number 3842 of 28 March."

An SFRS spokesperson said: "We received a call on March 28 at 10.38pm regarding a report of a building fire at Kirklandneuk Primary School in Renfrew. 

"We mobilised two appliances and left the scene at 11.47pm. 

"It was a small fire and no casualties were reported."
