A GLASGOW hotel which houses the homeless has been branded a ‘nightmare’ and ‘uninhabitable’ by a resident who claims he is living with a mice infestation.

Allan White was moved into the Rennie Mackintosh Hotel on Union Street, which is financially supported by Glasgow City Council.

He says he has seen mice at least eight times since moving in on July 20.

He told the Glasgow Times: “I’ve seen mice in my room and on the stairs of the hotel running up and down. In my room there’s a massive hole in the floor and mice are coming up and down.

“I’ve asked them to put something in the hole, but nothing’s been done.

“I’ve spoken to a few people, and a guy up from me and down from me are saying the same thing.

“It’s absolutely filthy - you wouldn’t keep a dog in it.”

Images show a mousehole in the corner of Mr White’s room. He says that hotel staff have given him a mousetrap in response to his concerns, but it has not worked in keeping mice away altogether.

He added that the mice have caused a bad smell throughout the hotel.

He said: “The place stinks as well. There is a strong smell of urine which smells like it's coming from the mice.

“It can be smelt the minute I walk in the front entrance of the hotel.”

Mr White has struggled with homelessness since getting into financial difficulty during the pandemic and trying to cope with the rising cost of living.

He says he has raised the issue of the mice with the council and hotel staff multiple times, but he feels that he is not being taken seriously enough.

Last year, we told how another homeless man living in the Rennie Mackintosh Hotel was living with an ‘insufferable’ mouse problem.

Resident Terry Murphy claimed that his sleeping was suffering and that mice were even jumping into residents’ beds during the night.

Mr White feels that placing homeless people in substandard living arrangements feels like they are being treated like ‘second-class citizens’ and that the state of his accommodation will continue to affect him.

He said: “The accommodation they’re putting people in is uninhabitable.

“I’ve seen a lot of guys here with addictions, mental health issues and debt but the council don’t want to help people, they just put people in here and forget about them.

“I’ve spoken to two other guys in the hotel, and they feel the same.

“I’m really angry and annoyed.”

He added: “The way homeless people get treated is totally out of order. People can end up in this situation through no fault of their own and they’re being treated like animals and put in hovels.

“It’s affecting me, I don’t want to be stuck here; I’m dreading the future.”

These fears have now led to Mr White leaving the hotel to stay with a friend for a few days.

The council have confirmed that they are now addressing the issue and have booked him into other accommodation.

A spokeswoman said: “We are aware of this complaint and have moved the service user to other accommodation while the issue is addressed.”

The Rennie Mackintosh Hotel was also contacted for comment.
