FIRE crews are still working to put out a blaze that ravaged a recycling centre in Glasgow yesterday.

We previously reported that a fire broke out at the NWH Waste Collection site in the East End of the city at around 2.35am on Wednesday. 

Emergency services scrambled to the scene where heavy plumes of smoke filled the air

There have been no reported casualties.

And more than 36 hours later, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that there are still firefighters on the scene extinguishing the blaze.

A spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 2.35am on Wednesday, February 8 to reports of a fire within the grounds of a recycling centre in Glasgow.

“Operations control mobilised six appliances and specialist resources to the city's Nuneaton Street.

“Work is ongoing to remove waste from the site in order to improve firefighting access.

"Two appliances currently remain on scene with crews continuing to work to extinguish the fire.

“There are no casualties."

When contacted by the Glasgow Times on Thursday morning, Police Scotland confirmed that roads in the nearby area were still closed. 

Clyde Gateway is closed between the Gallowgate and Dalmarnock Road junctions.

Nuneaton Street has also been shut to traffic.

London Road remains closed between Springfield Road and Fielden Street.
