A train operator is giving holidaymakers free travel if they have been affected by the air traffic control system failure.

TransPennine Express (TPE) is allowing customers to travel on their standard class services at no charge after many flights were delayed or cancelled on Monday.

It comes after we reported that flights from Glasgow Airport to the likes of Faro, Dublin, Amsterdam and Malaga were cancelled, while flights from London, Southampton and Belfast into the city had also been axed.

Darren Higgins, commercial director for TPE, said: “We recognise how difficult this experience has been for many people and hope this decision will provide much-needed relief to those who have been impacted by the technical problems.”

People who have been affected by the Air Traffic Control issues and are arriving back to the UK on an alternative date, time or at a different airport, will be able to travel on TPE Standard Class at no charge.

Customers should present their airline ticket or boarding pass as proof of return during the disruption.

The offer runs until August 31.
