A Glasgow sheriff told an offender "the same thing happened to my friend".

Ashley Hammond appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week after he pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and without insurance.

The Royston resident also admitted to driving without a test certificate.

At the hearing, his lawyer said that Hammond wasn’t aware he had been disqualified.

Sheriff Vincent Lunny remarked: "He was written to in England by authorities.

"The exact same thing happened to a friend of mine.

"He was written to at an address he was not living at. He was given six points and was disqualified. It was all done in his absence.

"I have had second-hand experience with this."

The court heard Hammond is now living in Glasgow.

His solicitor added: "He is no longer driving. He has a record but not for driving offences."

The 35-year-old was spotted by cops on Pinkston Road in North Glasgow at 5pm on January 9 this year.

Officers carried out checks and he was told he had no insurance or MOT.

The sheriff asked: "Did he get a letter from his insurance company that he was no longer insured?

"Can he show me a payment? I would like to see that."

After a short break, the case recalled and Hammond's agent confirmed he could not find the payment in his bank account over the last six months.

Sheriff Lunny said the payment would prove he was telling the truth.

Sentence was deferred for two weeks for more information.
