The police watchdog is to probe the unexplained death of a man in custody in Glasgow.

A 39-year-old man died at the scene of a major incident on Berkeley Street in the early hours of Friday morning, December 5.

Officers were called to a report of a disturbance on the street, which lies between the city centre and West End, at around 6.45am.

Cops had taken the man into their custody before he became unresponsive; he was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Scottish Ambulance Service, and his death is being treated as unexplained.

Enquiries remain ongoing, and the circumstances around how the man died will now be probed by the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC).

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The circumstances of the incident have been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC).”

Two women, aged 25 and 40, and a 27-year-old man were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers remain at the scene but say there is no threat to the wider public.

The Glasgow Times previously reported that the CID were confirmed to be on the scene, and a detective was spotted coming out of the Gaelic School, which is situated along the street.

Several cordons were put in place along the street, and dozens of cops were spotted on the scene.

The PIRC has been contacted for comment.
