Steven Gerrard has hinted that Alfredo Morelos could be dropped from tomorrow evening's Europa League clash with Bayer Leverkusen should it go ahead.

The Rangers manager has watched his star man falter in recent weeks with El Buffalo scoring just once in his last 11 games. That return has not been good enough and has contributed to the Light Blues' poor form of late that's seen them fall 13 points behind Celtic in the league.

In Europe, though, the Colombian has 14 goals in the competition this season including six in the group stages. But his disappointing performances of late mean Gerrard could be forced to leave him out from the start. "For us to have any chance of progression through this stage, we're going to have to have all the players on form and at it to bring the best and max out the course of both 90 minutes," the manager said.

"Alfredo is no different, he is aware of where his form's at. We're all aware of that. But we all know that he's very capable at this level against this type of opposition and him being at his best and providing or taking chances for us gives us a much better chance of progression. But I've got a decision to make in the number nine position."

Morelos missed the second-leg of Rangers' previous round of 32 clash against Braga through suspension and Swiss striker Florian Kamberi led the line.

A similar tactic, Gerrard admits, could be deployed at Ibrox tomorrow. "Whoever is picked in [the number nine] position, we need a real selfless performance and for them to be really tuned into what we're looking for from a tactical point of view. No-one within this gameplan or system can go off and do what they want because it can be very damaging to the way we want to play.

"Kamberi to be fair has been a breath of fresh air, whether it's been a cameo from the bench or when we've asked him to start. He's really tried to carry out what we've asked of him, brought energy to the team. At the weekend you could see his impact by his presence and a selfless style the way he plays. I've been really pleased with him.

"Over the course of both games I'm sure we're going to need Alfredo and Flo because obviously it's very disappointing not to have Jermaine Defoe available, he'll miss both games."

We told earlier how coronavirus outbreak could potentially see the postponement of tomorrow's game as next week's second-leg has already been set for behind closed doors.
