CHRIS SUTTON has taken a cheeky dig at the news Steven Gerrard has reportedly been cleared for talks with Aston Villa.

The Celtic hero couldn't resist a swipe at Rangers as he shared reports Gerrard is in discussion over a move to the Premier League club.

Taking to Twitter, Sutton posted: "I thought Steven was happy at Rangers?"

The quip comes after Gerrard had quashed reports linking him with a move to Newcastle.

Following the Ibrox side's 2-0 win over Brondby in October BT Sport reporter Emma Dodds probed Gerrard over a possible move away from Ibrox.

But Gerrard was defiant in his response as he ruled out a move away.

He said: “Do I look happy? Do I look settled?

"Don’t ask me silly questions then.”

Gerrard now appears set to make the move to Aston Villa after three-and-a-half years in Glasgow.

We reported Rangers are set to receive a multi-million pound compensation package if a deal goes through.

And it's expected Villa will secure a deal to land top target Gerrard in the coming days.

It's also reported that Gerrard will take with him some key backroom staff members including Gary McAllister and Michael Beale.
