HOMES near Glasgow have been "targeted" with graffiti.

Officers from East Kilbride's Community Policing Team are probing a number of incidents in the town predominantly in the Calderwood and St Leonards area.

Bus stops, homes, and underpasses are said to be among the affected areas which will come at a "significant cost" to fix.

Police say they are following a "positive line of enquiry" and urge anyone with information to come forward.

PC McLeod said: "I am seeking anyone who may have any information to come forward. Local residents of East Kilbride have been working hard to keep the town clean and will continue to do so even with these acts.

"We are following a positive line of enquiry and are looking for any other information from the public that would assist us in our enquires.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Andrew McLeod or PC Myko Tomaszczuk at East Kilbride on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

East Kilbride councillor Gladys Miller added: "I have had so many complaints from residents about the volume of graffiti in the town.

"While the perpetrator may believe their action is a form of art and expression, graffiti is illegal, and most residents see this as an unsightly destruction of private property.

"It gives our town a 'run-down' appearance, but apart from the physical and mental effect on the Community, it is the on-going cost to clean it up.

"I would like to appeal to the small number of people causing this distress and perhaps don’t appreciate how much distress this act affects the people in our town and its appearance.

"So many older residents will say, 'East Kilbride used to be beautiful'. Many people are trying to improve the appearance from litter picking to flower baskets and working with the Council to make sure they are repairing lighting, potholes, maintaining our green spaces and refurbishing areas like our play parks and Calderglen pathways.

"Please try and help East Kilbride and show the rest of South Lanarkshire that we can be proud of our wee town."
